Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to question specific decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
